What to Expect From 3 to 12 Months<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is something almost magical about your baby’s first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, you are holding this tiny newborn who seems perfectly content to sleep on your chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then suddenly, that same baby is smiling when you walk into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching for toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babbling at you like they have an entire story to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before you have fully processed any of it, you are watching them pull themselves up on the furniture and wondering how you got here so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as exciting as baby milestones can be, they can also create a lot of pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see another baby sitting before yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone asks whether your baby is crawling yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your parenting app announces a new milestone your baby apparently \u201cshould\u201d be doing this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly, instead of enjoying what your baby is<\/em> doing, you start worrying about everything they are not doing yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that sounds familiar, I want you to remember something before we talk about baby milestones by month:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development is not a race.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milestones help us understand how babies are developing, but they are not meant to turn every month into a test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC describes developmental milestones as skills children develop in the way they play, learn, speak, act, and move. Its milestone checklists focus on skills that most children\u2014about 75% or more\u2014can do by a certain age. They are designed to help parents notice development and start conversations with their child’s doctor when something feels off, not to replace formal developmental screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And babies really do develop differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One baby may be fascinated by movement and work hard on rolling and crawling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another may spend more energy babbling, smiling, and watching everything around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your job is not to make your baby hit every milestone before someone else’s baby does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your job is to watch them grow, give them opportunities to explore, and bring questions to your pediatrician when you have them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s walk through what your baby’s development may look like from around 3 months to their first birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 3 Months: Your Baby Is Starting to Feel Much More Social<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three months can feel like such a sweet transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is moving away from that sleepy newborn stage and becoming much more interested in you and the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may notice them watching your face more closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may smile when you talk to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may react to familiar voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly, those long stretches of feeding, sleeping, and diaper changes start getting little moments of interaction in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is often when parents start feeling like they are getting something back from the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You make a silly face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stare at you like you are the most interesting person they have ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, for a little while, you probably are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physically, your baby is also getting stronger. By the birth-to-3-month stage, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that babies may begin lifting their head and chest during tummy time, kicking and stretching, bringing their hands toward their mouth, and becoming more interested in grasping or interacting with objects. Socially, babies may begin developing a social smile and becoming more expressive with their face and body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby has only recently discovered that those arms and legs belong to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four months can be a lot of fun because your baby is becoming much more intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of simply looking at a toy, they may start reaching toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of accidentally bringing their hands together, you may notice them doing it more purposefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may become interested in grabbing your hair, your necklace, your glasses, or basically anything you would prefer they did not grab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their personality may also become easier to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They might laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may make sounds back when you speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may become excited when they recognize someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may turn their head toward your voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also a stage when tummy time may look very different from what it did a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may hold their head more steadily, push up more strongly on their arms, and look around with much more confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC’s current 4-month milestone guidance looks across social-emotional, language, cognitive, and movement development rather than treating one physical skill as the only sign of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is a helpful way for you to think about development too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is not just learning to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are learning how people respond to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How sounds work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How objects feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How their body moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much fun it is to make you repeat the same silly noise seventeen times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 5 Months: Your Baby Is Getting Stronger and More Curious<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Five months often feels like one of those in-between stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may be working on skills that become much more obvious at six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may roll in one direction or begin experimenting with rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may reach more accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may grab toys and bring them straight to their mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, you will probably notice that everything<\/em> goes to the mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is part of how babies explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A toy is interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your sleeve is interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their own foot is extremely interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may also begin showing stronger preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may recognize familiar people more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may get visibly excited during play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may laugh more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And their little conversations with you may become much more entertaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a good age to remember that milestones do not suddenly appear on the first day of each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development is gradual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your five-month-old may be working toward skills commonly associated with six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another baby may have already mastered some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That variation is exactly why milestone ages should be treated as useful developmental windows rather than deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 6 Months: The World Becomes a Lot More Interesting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

They may begin sitting with support or working toward sitting more independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their sounds may become more varied too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may hear squeals, laughs, repeated sounds, and lots of experimental baby conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is discovering that making noises gets reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you are probably giving them exactly the reaction they were hoping for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This stage also tends to bring more curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may want to touch everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grab everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taste everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play becomes increasingly important because babies learn through interaction and exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking to your baby, reading together, offering safe toys, giving supervised floor time, and responding to their sounds all give them opportunities to practice emerging skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And remember: you do not need an elaborate collection of developmental toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the most fascinating object in the room is a safe household item or your own face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 7 Months: Movement Starts Becoming a Bigger Part of the Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Seven months can bring a noticeable increase in your baby’s determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They see something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the challenge is figuring out how to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may be sitting more steadily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may roll to move around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may pivot on their belly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may push backward when they were clearly trying to go forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they may get extremely frustrated by this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That frustration is development too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby has an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their body has not quite figured out how to carry out the plan yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So they keep trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may notice more purposeful reaching, passing objects between hands, banging toys, dropping things, and then looking at you as though you<\/em> are responsible for picking them up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You probably are going to pick them up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they will drop them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations, you have discovered one of baby’s favorite developmental experiments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I drop this, will Mom or Dad bring it back?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, they will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 8 Months: Your Baby May Be Determined to Get Somewhere<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By eight months, many babies are much more interested in mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this is where comparison can really start getting loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One baby is crawling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another is scooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another is rolling everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another is perfectly happy sitting exactly where you put them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may start asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should my baby be crawling already?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babies can use different strategies to move around, and crawling does not happen on one exact schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some babies crawl on hands and knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some scoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some move backward before figuring out forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some use unusual crawling styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some may spend very little time traditionally crawling before moving toward pulling up and cruising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of obsessing over one specific movement, look at the broader picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is your baby becoming stronger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they using both sides of their body?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they reaching and exploring?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they gaining new skills?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they interacting with you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development is much bigger than whether they crawled before their friend’s baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 9 Months: Your Baby Is Becoming Very Aware of People<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nine months can be such an interesting social stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby knows you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really knows you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that can mean they are also becoming much more aware when someone is not<\/em> you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC includes behaviors such as becoming shy, clingy, or fearful around strangers and showing a range of facial expressions among social-emotional milestones around 9 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if your formerly cheerful baby suddenly stares suspiciously at Grandpa before burying their face in your shoulder, it does not necessarily mean anything went wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their social awareness is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separation anxiety may start becoming more noticeable too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They now understand enough about your presence to have feelings about your absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may also become more interactive during games like peekaboo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are learning patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently this is hilarious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, you will probably be required to repeat it many times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movement may become more confident around this stage too. Some babies sit independently, move toward objects, crawl, or begin experimenting with pulling themselves upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, your baby’s exact combination of skills may look different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 10 Months: Your Baby Has Opinions Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ten-month-olds can be wonderfully busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may move from one activity to another with a lot more purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may crawl or scoot toward something they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may pull themselves up using furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may move toys around with increasing coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may begin copying gestures or sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they may become very interested in what you<\/em> are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You open a cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They want the cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You use your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They want your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You drink from a cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly their toy is not nearly as interesting as your cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imitation becomes an important part of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babies are watching us constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are learning how objects are used and how people communicate by observing everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a great age for simple interactive play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respond when your baby babbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to turn your house into a classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordinary interaction is already full of learning opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 11 Months: Your Baby May Look Surprisingly Close to Toddlerhood<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eleven months can feel emotional because the first birthday is suddenly close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may be pulling to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may cruise along furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may become more confident moving between positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some babies may experiment with standing briefly without support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others are nowhere near doing that yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that can still be okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking is another milestone parents love to compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a first birthday is not a deadline for independent walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby’s development needs to be viewed as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication may also feel much more intentional now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may gesture toward something they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may respond to familiar words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their babbling may sound increasingly conversational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you will swear they said an actual word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you are simply a parent who desperately wants \u201cmamamamama\u201d to mean Mama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both experiences are allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 12 Months: One Whole Year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, here you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may look back at newborn photos and genuinely struggle to understand how that tiny baby became the child sitting in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At around one year, many babies are becoming increasingly mobile, communicative, social, and independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC’s one-year milestone framework looks at development across social-emotional, language and communication, cognitive, and movement areas, reinforcing that development should never be judged by one skill alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may pull to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may cruise around furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some may take independent steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others may still prefer crawling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may use gestures, understand familiar words, imitate you, and experiment with early words or sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may also have very clear opinions about what they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You wanted to cut the banana?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You offered the wrong cup?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the beginning of toddlerhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But underneath all that growing independence, your one-year-old still needs the same things they needed all year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities to explore safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please Do Not Turn Monthly Milestones Into Monthly Exams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I know it is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You search \u201cbaby milestones 8 months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see a list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you start checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doing this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not doing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doing this sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly you are worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But development is not a school test your baby either passes or fails on the day they turn a certain age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the CDC’s milestone system is designed as a developmental monitoring tool rather than a substitute for standardized developmental screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby’s pediatrician will look at development in context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That includes the skills your baby has gained, how they use their body, how they communicate, how they interact socially, their health history, and whether there has been any loss of previously acquired skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a concern, bring it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to wait for another parent to notice something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you do not have to wait until your next routine visit if you are genuinely worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Your Baby Was Born Early, Their Timeline May Look Different<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your baby was born prematurely, their pediatrician may discuss using corrected age when thinking about development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC specifically advises using corrected age for milestone checklists when a child was born more than three weeks prematurely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can make a meaningful difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A baby who arrived early has had less developmental time outside the womb than their chronological birthday suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if your baby’s timeline looks different, ask your pediatrician which age they want you to use when discussing milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should not have to figure that out alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Matters More Than Reaching a Skill First<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes parents become so focused on when<\/em> a skill happens that we forget to enjoy how<\/em> it happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time your baby works incredibly hard to reach a toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concentration on their face when they try to sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tiny sounds they repeat because you laughed the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proud smile after they finally pull themselves up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those moments are development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they are much more enjoyable when you are not constantly measuring them against someone else’s baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give your baby safe opportunities to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spend time on the floor together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respond to their sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them explore age-appropriate objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play simple social games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not trying to train your baby into milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are giving them a safe, responsive environment where development has room to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Should You Talk to Your Pediatrician?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whenever you are concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to wait until a concern becomes \u201cserious enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developmental questions are part of well-child care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell your pediatrician if your baby is not reaching milestones you expected, seems to use one side of their body very differently from the other, has difficulty with movement or interaction that worries you, or loses a skill they previously had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC encourages parents to act early if a child is not meeting one or more milestones, has lost skills, or if the parent has another developmental concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your pediatrician may simply reassure you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may want to watch development for a little longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or they may recommend developmental screening or further evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting an evaluation does not mean someone has already decided something is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means you are paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is exactly what you are supposed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Last Thing, Mom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your baby’s first year is going to move faster than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, maybe you are waiting for the first roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon you will be waiting for sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then crawling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then that first little step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is so easy to spend each stage looking ahead toward the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try not to miss the baby who is right in front of you while you wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your three-month-old does not need to act like a four-month-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your eight-month-old does not need to crawl because someone else’s baby does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your one-year-old does not need to walk across the birthday party just because everyone is watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is learning every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the progress is obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is happening quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep giving them room to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
