When a baby’s age falls between two checklist ages, the CDC recommends using the younger checklist. So rather than expecting a perfect “seven-month list,” think of this month as a bridge—your baby is building on six-month skills and slowly moving toward what you may see closer to nine months.

And Mom, that means there can be a lot of variation here.

One seven-month-old may already be moving across the floor.

Another may be perfectly happy sitting and playing.

One may babble constantly.

Another may spend more time quietly watching everything around them.

The goal is not to make your baby look exactly like another baby the same age.

It is to notice how your baby is continuing to grow.

Sitting May Suddenly Look Much More Stable

Remember when your baby tried to sit and immediately folded forward or tipped sideways?

At seven months, you may notice things beginning to look much steadier.

Your baby may sit for longer stretches, use their hands less for support, and reach toward a toy without instantly losing balance.

Or they may still need your help.

Both can happen at this age.

At six months, the CDC looks for babies leaning on their hands for support while sitting. By nine months, many babies can get themselves into a sitting position. Your seven-month-old is somewhere between those stages, building strength, balance, and coordination along the way.

This is why I do not want you staring at your baby thinking, Why aren’t you sitting perfectly yet?

They are learning.

Sometimes learning looks like sitting beautifully for thirty seconds and then slowly falling sideways onto a pillow.

That still counts as practice.

Your Baby May Be Trying Very Hard to Move

Seven months can make floor time a lot more interesting.

Your baby may roll to get somewhere.

Pivot on their belly.

Push backward.

Rock on their hands and knees.

Scoot.

Or somehow move several feet without you understanding exactly how they did it.

And naturally, this is usually when the object they want most is the one thing they should not have.

This does not mean every seven-month-old should be crawling.

Crawling has a wide developmental range, and the CDC does not list crawling as a required milestone on either its six- or nine-month checklist.

So if someone asks:

“Is your baby crawling yet?”

and yours is sitting there happily chewing on a toy, you do not need to panic.

Movement develops in different ways.

What you may notice instead is increasing strength and determination.

Your baby wants to explore.

They are simply working out the transportation.

Reaching Is Getting Much More Accurate

At five months, reaching may have looked like:

I see the toy.

I want the toy.

I have somehow hit myself in the face instead.

By seven months, your baby’s hands may be getting much more coordinated.

They may reach directly for something they want, hold it, examine it, shake it, bang it, and—of course—put it into their mouth.

You may also notice them beginning to move objects from one hand to the other.

The CDC lists transferring things between hands as a milestone most babies can do by nine months.

So if you see the beginnings of that now, you are watching their coordination develop right in front of you.

Simple toys are perfect for this.

Blocks.

Soft balls.

Rings.

Safe household objects appropriate for their age.

You do not need complicated developmental equipment.

Sometimes your baby would rather study a measuring cup for ten minutes anyway.

Dropping Things Is Suddenly Very Interesting

Mom, you may begin to feel like your baby’s personal object-retrieval service.

They hold a toy.

They drop it.

You pick it up.

They drop it again.

You pick it up again.

And then they look at you with complete innocence before doing it one more time.

This can feel like your baby is testing you.

In a way, they are testing something—just not your patience specifically.

Babies are beginning to understand cause and effect.

The CDC even recommends games involving dropping and returning toys because they help babies learn that their actions make things happen.

So yes, the repeated dropping actually has developmental value.

Even if you are personally less impressed by repetition number twenty-three.

The Babbling May Be Getting Much More Serious

Seven-month-old conversations can be wonderful.

Your baby may experiment with all kinds of sounds.

“Ba.”

“Ma.”

“Ga.”

Long squeals.

Raspberries.

Entire speeches delivered with very serious facial expressions.

Do not rush to decide whether “mamama” officially means Mama yet.

At this stage, babies are often experimenting with the sounds their mouths can make.

By nine months, the CDC lists repeated strings of sounds such as “mamamama” and “bababababa” among common communication milestones.

At seven months, you may hear the beginnings of that.

And the best thing you can do is answer.

Your baby says:

“Bababa.”

You can say:

“Bababa! You have so much to tell me.”

Talk naturally.

Pause.

Let them answer.

That back-and-forth is far more important than trying to force an actual first word.

Your Baby May Be More Attached to You

This is around the stage when you may notice your baby becoming much more particular about people.

Maybe they used to happily go to anyone.

Now someone unfamiliar reaches for them and they suddenly turn toward you like:

Absolutely not.

Social awareness grows significantly during the second half of the first year. By nine months, the CDC includes being shy, clingy, or fearful around strangers, reacting when a parent leaves, and looking when their name is called among common milestones.

Your seven-month-old may not be doing all of that yet.

But you may begin seeing little hints.

They watch unfamiliar faces carefully.

They reach toward you when someone else holds them.

They notice when you walk away.

And Mom, if your baby suddenly only wants you during certain moments, I know that can be exhausting.

It can also be a sign that their understanding of familiar people is becoming stronger.

You are not creating a “clingy baby” by comforting them.

You are responding to someone who is still learning that when you leave the room, you come back.

Peekaboo May Actually Become Funny

For adults, peekaboo makes absolutely no sense.

For babies?

Comedy.

You cover your face.

Disappear.

Come back.

Your baby smiles.

Then you repeat it until you question every decision that led you here.

By nine months, smiling or laughing during peekaboo is one of the CDC’s social milestones. Babies around this stage are becoming increasingly interested in games involving people appearing, disappearing, and returning.

Simple games like this are wonderful because they combine connection, attention, and learning.

And again, no fancy toy required.

Just you hiding behind your hands.

Your Baby May Be Very Interested in Food Now

If you have started complementary foods with guidance from your pediatrician, seven months can be delightfully messy.

Your baby may lean toward the spoon.

Grab food.

Smear it across the tray.

Put some in their mouth.

Put much more in their hair.

At this stage, feeding is not only about eating.

Your baby is exploring textures, smells, tastes, and how objects feel in their hands.

By nine months, the CDC lists using the fingers to rake food toward themselves as a common movement milestone.

You may see early versions of this now.

Feeding skills develop gradually, so follow your pediatrician’s guidance around safe textures, allergens, choking prevention, and your baby’s individual readiness.

And please do not worry if a meal looks more like sensory play than dinner.

That is very normal baby behavior.

Your Home Is Starting to Look Different From the Floor

This is also the month when I want you to look around your house from your baby’s perspective.

Literally.

Get down on the floor.

Suddenly you notice:

Cords.

Tiny objects.

Furniture edges.

Cabinets.

Things under the couch.

That random coin nobody knew was there.

As your baby becomes more mobile, baby-proofing becomes much more important.

The CDC recommends creating safe spaces for babies to explore and moving sharp, breakable, toxic, or dangerous items out of reach as mobility increases.

Do not wait until your baby is officially crawling.

Babies have a habit of developing new movement skills with absolutely no warning.

The baby who “cannot reach that” today may prove you wrong tomorrow morning.

You Do Not Need to Teach Your Baby to Crawl

This is a big one.

You may see videos promising exercises that will “make your baby crawl faster.”

You do not need to race toward crawling.

Give your baby safe floor time.

Place interesting toys nearby.

Let them reach, roll, push, and experiment.

Spend time down there with them.

That is enough.

Your baby’s job is to figure out movement.

Your job is to provide a safe space where they can try.

The same goes for sitting.

You can support practice without turning every play session into milestone training.

Your baby is not preparing for an exam.

They are developing.

There is a difference.

And Please Do Not Compare Sitting, Crawling, and Babbling All at Once

This is where milestone anxiety can become especially intense.

One baby crawls early.

Another babbles constantly.

Another sits beautifully.

And suddenly you feel like your baby needs to be doing all three.

But development does not always move evenly across every area.

Your baby might be incredibly focused on physical movement right now.

Another baby may spend more time developing communication.

That is why the CDC tracks development across social-emotional, language, cognitive, and physical areas instead of using one skill to decide how a baby is doing overall.

So look at your baby as a whole little person.

Not a collection of boxes.

If Your Baby Was Born Early, Keep Corrected Age in Mind

If your baby was born more than three weeks prematurely, the CDC recommends using corrected age when following developmental milestone checklists.

That means the age on the calendar may not be the most useful age for comparing developmental expectations.

Your pediatrician can help you understand how corrected age applies to your baby.

Especially during the first year, that context can make milestone conversations much more accurate—and hopefully much less stressful.

When Should You Talk to Your Pediatrician?

Mom, anytime you are worried.

You never need to wait for an article to tell you your concern is important enough.

Maybe your baby seems much less steady than you expected.

Maybe they are not using both sides of their body similarly.

Maybe they do not respond much to familiar voices.

Maybe you are concerned about interaction, feeding, movement, or communication.

Or maybe your baby has stopped doing something they used to do.

Bring it up.

The CDC encourages parents to talk with their child’s doctor if a baby is not meeting expected milestones, loses a previously acquired skill, or if the parent simply has another developmental concern.

Sometimes your pediatrician will reassure you.

Sometimes they may want to monitor something.

Sometimes further developmental screening may help.

You are not overreacting by asking.

You are paying attention.

One Last Thing, Mom

Seven months can feel like your baby has suddenly decided there is an entire world waiting to be explored.

They want the toy across the floor.

They want to touch your face.

They want the spoon.

They definitely want the remote.

And their little body is working incredibly hard to figure out how to reach all of it.

Maybe they sit beautifully.

Maybe they still wobble.

Maybe they are almost crawling.

Maybe they have absolutely no interest in crawling yet.

That is okay.

You do not need to spend this month waiting for your baby to perform the next impressive milestone.

Sit on the floor with them.

Answer those increasingly serious little babbles.

Play peekaboo until you are both tired of it.

Let them reach, roll, wiggle, and work things out.

And when you catch yourself wondering why another baby is doing something yours is not, come back to the baby right in front of you.

Look at what they can do today that they could not do a month ago.

That is development too.

And if something genuinely worries you, bring it to your pediatrician.

You do not need to know exactly what is wrong before asking a question.

You just need to keep knowing your baby.

<p
