 Your Baby at One Year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One year, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is officially twelve months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I know that sentence probably feels a little impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A whole year ago, you were meeting this tiny newborn and trying to understand what every cry meant. Now you may have a little person pulling themselves up on the couch, waving at people, babbling across the room, feeding themselves tiny bites, and making it very clear when they do or absolutely do not want something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first birthday can bring so many emotions with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes a little worry too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because once your baby turns one, everyone suddenly seems interested in what they can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre they walking yet?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow many words do they say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo they wave?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre they still crawling?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before you know it, you are comparing your baby’s first year with someone else’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom, your baby’s birthday is not a developmental exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC defines milestones as things most children about 75% or more can do by a certain age. At one year, those milestones cover the way your baby plays, communicates, learns, and moves. They are useful for helping you notice development, but they are not meant to turn every new skill into a deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So instead of asking whether your one-year-old is doing everything perfectly, let\u2019s look at the changes you may be noticing right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Baby May Be Getting Ready to Walk   But They Do Not Have To Be Walking Yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is probably the milestone that gets the most attention around the first birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your baby is already walking independently, wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they are not, that does not automatically mean anything is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By one year, the CDC looks for babies pulling themselves up to stand and walking while holding onto furniture. Independent walking is not required on the one-year checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may spend this month standing beside the couch, slowly moving sideways while holding on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may let go for half a second before quickly grabbing the furniture again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may stand completely unsupported and then immediately sit back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or they may still prefer crawling because crawling gets them where they want to go much faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, why would they give up an efficient transportation system before they are ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking requires balance, coordination, strength, and confidence. Those things do not all arrive on the morning of the first birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So please do not spend the birthday party trying to convince your baby to take a step for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have plenty of time to become a toddler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those Little Hands Are Doing So Much More Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Remember when your baby’s whole hand wrapped around everything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one year, you may notice how surprisingly precise those tiny fingers have become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may carefully pick up a little piece of food between their thumb and pointer finger, a skill the CDC includes among its one-year movement milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Mom, watching this skill develop can be strangely fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They see one tiny piece of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concentrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look incredibly proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then drop it directly onto the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby’s improved hand control is helping with much more than eating. They may turn pages in a board book, place objects into containers, take things back out, bang toys together, or become very interested in figuring out how everyday objects work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also why you somehow have to become even more careful about tiny objects around the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your one-year-old is very good at finding the crumb, coin, or tiny piece of something that everyone else missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this stage, baby-proofing is still very much an ongoing job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Baby Probably Understands More Than They Can Say<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the sweetest things about twelve months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may not have many clear words yet, but that does not mean language is not growing quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere’s your cup?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they look toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they move toward you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGive it to Mama.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes when they feel cooperative they actually do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By one year, the CDC includes understanding \u201cno,\u201d waving bye-bye, and using a special name such as Mama, Dada, or another familiar name among common communication milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some one-year-olds may have a couple of meaningful words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others may still rely mostly on babbling, gestures, pointing, reaching, and facial expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both communication and understanding are developing during this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So keep talking naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need vocabulary drills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk while you get them dressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name the foods on their tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Point out the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the same favorite book over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wave goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your baby points or reaches toward something, give them the word for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou want your ball?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou see the light?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those little moments help connect the words they hear with the world they already understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gestures Are Becoming Part of the Conversation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your one-year-old may have discovered that they do not need words to make themselves very clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They reach their arms toward you because they want up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They hand you something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They push something away when they have had enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may even shake their head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is communication too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes it is incredibly effective communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may know exactly what your baby wants just from the look on their face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By this point, you have spent an entire year learning each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know the tired expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hungry sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little noise that means they are about to become very unhappy with whatever is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is learning language, but the two of you have already built a language of your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play Is Starting to Feel Much More Interactive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Remember when play mostly meant shaking a toy in front of your baby and hoping they were interested?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now your baby may actually want you involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may hand something to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait for you to give it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copy you when you clap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laugh during a familiar game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By one year, the CDC includes playing simple games with you, such as pat-a-cake, among common social and emotional milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you still do not need complicated toys or scheduled activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the best play at this age is incredibly ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build a tiny block tower and let your baby knock it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put a toy under a blanket and let them find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roll a ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sing with hand motions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them put objects into a container and dump them back out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby is learning about cause and effect, imitation, problem-solving, and communication while they play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not have to look educational to be educational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mealtime May Feel Like a Whole New Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Twelve-month-olds can be very opinionated little diners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day they love something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day you offer the exact same food and apparently you have deeply offended them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may want to feed themselves now, which often means mealtime becomes a combination of eating, experimenting, dropping, smashing, and inspecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one year, babies may pick up small pieces of food using the thumb and pointer finger and drink from a cup without a lid while an adult holds it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those skills are helping your baby become more independent at meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue following your pediatrician’s guidance about nutrition, milk transitions, safe food sizes and textures, allergens, and choking prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And remember that becoming more independent does not always mean becoming less messy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it means the exact opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Baby May Still Be Very Attached to You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Turning one does not suddenly make separation easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby may still cry when you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch you closely around unfamiliar people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reach immediately for you if someone new approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or suddenly become very upset at daycare drop-off even if they were fine before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean you have done something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby has spent the last year learning exactly who their familiar people are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as their understanding grows, they become more aware of when those people are present and when they are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue using simple, calm goodbyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell them when you are leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come back when you say you will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play games where things disappear and return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With time and repetition, your baby learns that goodbye does not mean gone forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Yes, You May Be Seeing the Beginning of Toddler Opinions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There can be such a funny shift around the first birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your sweet little baby suddenly seems to have extremely strong feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You take away something unsafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You stop feeding them because they clearly said they were done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently they have changed their mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You try to put on a jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absolutely unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom, this does not mean your baby has suddenly become difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are becoming more independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can want things long before they have the words or emotional regulation to explain what they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That frustration can come out through crying, protesting, pushing things away, or collapsing dramatically into your lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The toddler stage is getting closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And part of what you are seeing is a baby who is starting to realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am my own little person.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And occasionally exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Baby May Still Look Very Much Like a Baby<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even though we suddenly start calling children \u201ctoddlers\u201d around this stage, your one-year-old may still look very baby-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, growth begins slowing during the second year compared with the rapid growth of infancy, and there is a broad range of normal body size and appearance at this age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means the first birthday is another good time to resist comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another baby may be taller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chunkier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have more teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have almost no teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your pediatrician is looking at your child’s individual growth pattern over time rather than comparing them with the baby sitting beside them at a birthday party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth charts are about patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What If Your One-Year-Old Is Not Doing Everything on the Milestone List?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is important, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A milestone checklist should help you notice development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should not become something you use to diagnose your baby by yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC specifically notes that its milestone materials are developmental monitoring tools and are not substitutes for standardized developmental screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if there is something your baby is not doing, look at the bigger picture and bring your concern to your pediatrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe your baby is not pulling to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they do not seem to respond to familiar words or sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they are not using gestures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they rarely interact with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the way they move seems unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or maybe they have lost a skill they previously had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to wait until the concern becomes obvious to everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mention it at your baby’s well-child visit or earlier if you are worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes your pediatrician will reassure you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they may want to monitor something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes developmental screening or further evaluation may be recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point is not to panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point is to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if your baby was born more than three weeks prematurely, the CDC recommends using corrected age when using its milestone checklists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby’s beginning matters when you are thinking about their timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Last Thing, Mom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One year ago, you were meeting each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were learning how to hold them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to feed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to soothe them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to understand a tiny person who could not tell you what they needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now look at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may wave at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reach for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Call you Mama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull themselves onto their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cruise along the couch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand you a toy because they want you to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are so many dramatic milestones during the first year that it is easy to measure these twelve months by what your baby learned to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Mom, you grew too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You learned their cries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their favorite songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their tired cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact way they like to be held when something feels wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That first year was not only your baby becoming bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the two of you becoming familiar with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So celebrate the first step if it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrate the first word if it came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But also celebrate the tiny things nobody puts on milestone charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way they look for you in a crowded room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way they lean against you when they are tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laugh you know exactly how to get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little hand reaching for yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your baby does not need to arrive at one year ahead of anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have already done something incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have spent twelve whole months becoming themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
