You look at all the products, read the reviews, watch the videos, compare the options, and eventually start feeling like you have figured out exactly what your baby is going to need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then your baby arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And suddenly the bottle set you researched for three weeks is sitting untouched because your baby prefers a completely different nipple. The giant box of newborn diapers does not fit properly. The adorable newborn outfits barely get worn. The expensive gadget everyone said was essential somehow becomes the thing you keep moving out of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That does not mean you made bad choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It means you were shopping for a baby before you actually knew your baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why some of the most common baby registry regrets<\/strong> are not necessarily bad products. They are products parents bought too much of, bought too early, or bought before knowing whether they would actually fit their baby’s needs and their family’s routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your registry should absolutely help you prepare. One diaper may fit beautifully around your baby’s thighs while another leaves gaps and leaks. You may love one brand during the newborn stage and switch completely once your baby becomes more active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sizing is unpredictable too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some babies spend weeks in newborn diapers. Others move into size 1 almost immediately. If you register for several huge boxes in one newborn size, you may end up with more diapers than your baby can actually wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A better approach is to have enough diapers to get through those first days without turning your nursery into a diaper warehouse. You can always buy more once you know what fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same idea applies to wipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Having wipes ready makes sense, but buying a year’s supply of one exact kind before you know how your baby’s skin reacts may be unnecessary. Some babies seem comfortable with almost anything, while others do better when their diaper-care routine stays especially simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are going to buy diapers and wipes for a long time, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no need to buy all of them before the baby arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bottle shopping is another area where preparing too<\/em> well can create regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You find the bottle with thousands of good reviews, choose the complete starter set, add extra nipples, maybe a bottle warmer and drying system, and assume feeding is officially handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then your newborn disagrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Babies can have very real preferences when it comes to bottle nipples, flow, shape, and how easily they can latch. A bottle another baby accepts immediately may frustrate yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why buying a smaller number before birth can make more sense than committing to a huge set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your baby likes them, wonderful. Then you can add more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If they do not, you have not spent a large part of your registry budget on bottles that will sit in the cupboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This applies to feeding accessories too. A sterilizer may fit beautifully into one routine, while another parent prefers a simpler setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You will understand your feeding routine much better once you are actually living it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You do not have to design the perfect feeding station months before you know how your baby will eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This one is especially difficult because newborn clothes are almost impossible to resist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything is cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when you are waiting to meet your baby, buying those little sleepers and outfits can make the whole experience feel more real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So yes, buy newborn clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just do not make every item in your baby’s closet newborn size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You have no way of knowing exactly how big your baby will be at birth or how quickly they will grow. Some babies get plenty of wear out of newborn clothes. Others are already more comfortable in 0\u20133 month sizes almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It also helps to think about what newborns actually wear most days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Soft sleepers and simple bodysuits tend to get much more use than complicated outfits. In the middle of the night, you are going to appreciate a zipper much more than six tiny buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Special outfits are lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You just probably do not need fifteen of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Registering for clothing across several sizes gives you something useful waiting when your baby suddenly seems to grow overnight which, somehow, they will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you build a registry, many sites encourage you to prepare for your baby’s entire first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So while you are still thinking about newborn bottles, you may also find yourself adding bowls, toddler plates, snack containers, straw cups, freezer trays, and an entire collection of solid-feeding products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may use those things eventually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But by the time your baby starts solids, you may have very different preferences than you do now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You will know more about how much space you have, how you want to approach feeding, what products are easy for you to clean, and what your baby actually enjoys using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A high chair is a good example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You will probably need one later, but you do not necessarily need it sitting in your house while your newborn is still sleeping beside you. If someone wants to gift one from your registry, great. But do not feel pressure to completely outfit your future toddler’s dining setup during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your baby will not wake up six months from now and discover all the high chairs have disappeared from America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can shop again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Swaddles can be incredibly helpful for some newborns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other babies seem personally offended by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may also find that your baby likes one style and refuses another. Maybe a traditional swaddle blanket works beautifully. Maybe you prefer a zip or hook-and-loop design. Maybe your newborn spends every night trying to free their arms until you finally stop fighting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why I would avoid buying a large collection of one swaddle style before birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Have a couple of options ready if you plan to swaddle, then see what works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sleep products are also an area where safety has to matter more than whether something looks cozy on a registry. The CPSC currently advises parents to use products actually intended for infant sleep, such as compliant cribs, bassinets, play yards, and bedside sleepers, and to keep the sleep space bare except for a fitted sheet. Babies who fall asleep elsewhere should be moved to an appropriate safe sleep space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inclined infant sleepers are banned hazardous products in the US, and the CPSC continues to warn against using products that do not meet infant sleep requirements as sleep spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So before adding anything marketed around \u201csleep,\u201d \u201clounging,\u201d or \u201crest\u201d to your registry, check what the product is actually designed and approved to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cozy-looking does not automatically mean appropriate for sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A lot of registry regret comes from buying solutions before you know whether you will have the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A wipe warmer is a perfect example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some parents love theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others discover their baby is completely fine with regular wipes and stop using the warmer almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bottle warmers, specialty formula mixers, elaborate diaper organizers, smart changing pads, multiple sound machines, and other gadgets can fall into the same category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of these products are automatically useless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is whether they fit your<\/em> life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A bottle warmer may become one of your favorite things if it works well with your feeding routine. Or you may realize you never need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is hard to know during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So if you are unsure about a gadget, it is okay to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once your baby arrives, you will notice the repetitive little parts of the day that genuinely frustrate you. That is when buying something designed to make that exact task easier can feel worth every penny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A product is much more useful when it solves a problem you already understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Baby toys are another registry category that can get much bigger than it needs to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your newborn is not going to arrive needing a playroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the early months, your face, your voice, movement around the room, simple books, and a few age-appropriate toys can offer plenty of stimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As your baby develops, their play changes quickly. The toy that fascinates a three-month-old may be far less interesting several months later, while an older baby may suddenly love stacking cups, textured toys, or objects they can put into containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why buying gradually works so well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A smaller selection gives you the chance to see what catches your baby’s attention before filling the house with toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may also receive toys as gifts after birth, birthdays, holidays, and visits from people who simply cannot resist buying something cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trust me, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The toys tend to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You do not need all of them waiting before your baby does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some baby products are not only expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A swing looks perfectly reasonable in a store until it is sitting in the middle of your living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A giant stroller might have every possible feature, but if lifting it into your trunk feels like a workout, you may start questioning why you chose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A changing table may look beautiful in the nursery, but perhaps you discover that most diaper changes happen downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why your actual home matters when choosing registry gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Measure spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think about storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consider stairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Look at the size of your car trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think about where a product will live when it is not being used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is especially useful if you live in a smaller apartment or have limited storage space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The best baby gear is not the gear with the most features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the gear you can actually live with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is really what most of these purchases have in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During pregnancy, you are imagining your future routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there is nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You have to prepare somehow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But you do not yet know whether your baby will love the stroller, tolerate the carrier, accept the pacifier, need a particular bottle, stay in newborn clothes for three weeks or three days, or sleep happily in the swaddle everyone recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those answers come later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That does not mean your registry needs to be empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It just means you can build it with flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Start with the things you know every baby needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Add a few products you genuinely think will make your life easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Choose small quantities when preferences or sizing are unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And let some of the later-stage products wait until you have a better idea of who your baby is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is not being unprepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is preparing realistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are probably going to buy something for your baby that you barely use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Almost everyone does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it will be a bottle warmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe a pile of newborn outfits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe a particular swaddle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe an expensive gadget that seemed completely life-changing when you watched someone demonstrate it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That does not make the whole registry a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You were preparing with the information you had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal is simply to leave enough flexibility that those unused purchases do not become half the nursery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So when you are tempted to buy ten of something before your baby arrives, buy two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you are not sure whether you need the gadget, wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a product is meant for a stage six months away, remember that you have six months to figure it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your baby registry is a starting point, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does not have to contain the answer to every question your baby’s first year might bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes meeting your baby first is the best shopping research you can possibly do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There is a very specific kind of confidence you have when you are pregnant and building a baby registry, Mom.
